Perdido Vineyards has started turning wine into hand sanitizer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Alabama winery decided to help out all first responders and essential businesses that are in desperate need of hand sanitizer.

“We are reaching out to first responders, care facilities and essential businesses and have been getting great responses,” Perdido Vineyard’s Sherri Clay said. “Within just 24 hours, we had a lot of claims, but our main issue are that jugs are hard to come by these days.

“We have been talking to our state treasurer because the state is giving us a tax break to make this hand sanitizer based on the world health organization’s guidelines, which is 80 percent alcohol. Currently we have 48 containers, and we are going to have 58 containers to sell but we still have 10 gallons without containers.”

Clay said the vineyard will have a curbside event for families soon.

“We are currently working on making this available,” she said. “Hopefully in the next week or so we will have more details on when this event will take place. Our top priority is to supply our first responders, care centers, essential employees, and then the community.

“Additionally we still have 16 gallons left to claim if anyone or any essential workers or businesses need them,” she said.
