Looking Back: Church’s Chicken had quite a deal

Thirty years ago, in 1990, Church’s Chicken had a special “porkchop” dinner for $2.99 with a porkchop, white beans and rice, a small slaw and a 16 ounce drink.
Not a bad deal as compared to today’s prices.
A youth was shot in the foot by an acquaintance at the Southern Normal High School.
An industrial banquet was held at the Brewton Country Club. Representatives from Flomaton, Atmore and Brewton were there to discuss plans to boost industry in the area. Howard Shell, former mayor of Atmore, was the speaker for approximately 200 attendees.
Robert Lee O’Farrell turned 95 years old and credited his longevity to hard work.
The Atmore Advance was having a contest where contestants had to pick either Auburn or Alabama to win The Iron Bowl.
The Strand Theatre began showing matinee Christmas movies each week for children during the month of December. The price to attend the movie was one can of food to be given to the needy. The program was sponsored by the theatre and Atmore merchants.
The Atmore Public Library was to have programs centered around the theme of an old fashioned Christmas.
The city of Atmore was planning a celebration of the first anniversary of Amtrak stopping in Atmore.
The annual Christmas Tour of Homes was scheduled for Atmore. This is one tradition that people seem to enjoy. I can remember going on one of these tours one time and I really enjoyed it. Most of us like seeing how the rest of the world decorates and celebrates the Christmas season.
Now that Thanksgiving is over we can look forward to the next holiday coming up. And then the end of a year that most of us will be glad to see go. Maybe this will help us to realize what the true meaning of Christmas is about. Speaking for myself, I am still under quarantine and know nothing about buying online, so nothing to buy.
