Hard freeze warning issued for Atmore

A hard freeze warning will be in effect for Atmore, Brewton and Flomaton in Escambia County, and Walnut Hill and Century, Fla. from 8 p.m. today until 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 15-20 degrees are forecasted tonight.
Conditions tonight may kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possible damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Unprotected pipes can freeze and burst, according to the NWS.
Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.
Additionally, a wind chill advisory has been issued for the same area, from 8 tonight until 9 tomorrow morning.
Wind chills as low as 10 to 15 degrees are likely, according to the NWS.
Exposed skin may quickly become frostbitten or frozen.
If travel is absolutely necessary, prepare and take a winter storm kit, including such items as tire chains, jumper cables, flashlight, shovel. blankets and extra clothing.Also take water, a first aid
kit, or anything else that would help you survive in case you become stranded.
Travel is highly discouraged due to the possibility of black ice on roadways.
You are urged to stay indoors until conditions improve. If you must go outside, several layers of clothes will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat. A hat is also important as half your body heat loss can be from the head.
