School Year 2009-10 was a successful year for the VFW’s Veterans in School Program.  Eight schools in the Atmore area and 37 students participated in the VFW’s Voice of Democracy, Patriot’s Pen, Citizenship / Americanism programs, and four JNROTC cadets were presented medals for their academic and leadership abilities.

In addition, six teachers were recognized as outstanding teachers who perpetuate our nation’s noblest traditions and highest values.

In the Voice of Democracy Program, students had to record on a CD a three to five minute essay on “Does America Still Have Heroes.”    In the Patriot’s Pen Program, student had to write an essay of 300-500 words on “When is the Right Time to Honor our Military Heroes?”

A VFW Veterans Committee reviewed these essays and selected first, second and third place winning essays that were submitted to the state level for judging.

Citizenship and Americanism programs were presented at elementary schools.  Students who memorized the Pledge of Allegiance or participated in flag demonstrations were awarded certificates for their efforts.

Last, but not least, were the NJROTC cadets who do so much for the community at various ceremonies and parades.  Cadets from Northview High School and Escambia County High were awarded medals for academic and military leadership excellence.

Essays from the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Programs will be published weekly in local news media.

In the meantime, the VFW’s 2010-11 Veterans in School Program is now underway and hopefully will be supported by schools as done in the past.
