The Atmore City Council adopted a resolution for the purchase of the Mobile Data Information System (MDIS) during its meeting on Monday.

Chief Chuck Brooks said this purchase is about three years in the making.

Brooks said Alacourt, which governs the municipal court and traffic citations, has been fazing out the paper tickets that officers issue on traffic citations.

Brooks said the system is going to a paper-generated ticket by computer.

“Alacourt has donated to our department 20 laptop computers that we’re going to install in our patrol cars,” he said. “They also donated 20 of the printers that go with the (laptop).

“That’s a total of about $50,000,” he said. “The laptops are the hard cased laptops, and they’re quite expensive.”

Brooks said the MDIS will allow officers to know addresses, generate police reports on scene or parked without having them come into the department.

“This will help keep officers on the road,” he said.

Brooks said there’s a grant that the department is in line to be awarded next year that’ll help with the expense of the system.

In other business, the city:

• approved the Atmore Public Library board reappointment of Leigh Ann Rowland;

• adopted resolution 2022-22 for surplus property, which includes two vans from the Sail Center, to be placed up for auction; and,

• approved the cost report for abatement of grass and weed nuisance ordinance. In August 2022, the council approved a second presentation of the ordinance, which allowed the city to abate the grass and weeds at residences within the city limits. The cost for each property is around $450. The list of properties abated of grass and weeds included:

• 98 Brown St., $59.16

• 53 Harris St., $492.55

• 158 Harris St., $484.16

• 0 Lee St., $434.73

• 1126 S. Presley St., $434.73

• 1415 Rockaway Creek Rd., $484.73

• 154 Trout St., $434.73

The cost reports will be filed as a tax lien with the county.
