In a low-scoring matchup the Escambia County Middle School Lady Eagles were defeated 14-13 by the St. Paul’s Lady Saints on Thursday night at ECMS.
The Lady Eagles (8-3) played a tight contest with the Lady Saints, but a scoreless third quarter kept them from earning a win.
In the first quarter, the Lady Saints jumped out to an 8-4 lead.
The Lady Eagles fought back in the second quarter tying the game at eight before halftime by outscoring the Lady Saints 4-0.
Following halftime, the Lady Eagles allowed the Lady Saints to take the lead again and were unable to overcome the deficit.
The Lady Saints’ defense held the Eagles to zero points in the third quarter and added four to their total to take the lead 12-8.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Saints 5-2, but due to the scoreless third period they were unable to pick up the win falling 14-13.
Lady Eagles head coach Alice White said her team were unable to find their rhythm in the loss.
“We had our moments where we played hard, but we didn’t get into our game,” she said. “The girls were shooting, but their shots just didn’t fall in this one. St. Paul’s played tight defense and double-teamed Nicole Johnson when she had the ball.”
Johnson and fellow Lady Eagle Zhanae Salter led ECMS with four points apiece. Johnson also had three blocks and two assists.
Laticia Barron added three points, while Ychelle Walker recorded two points and six steals.
