The Escambia County School System recently opened its IT Academy at Escambia County High School.
The Atmore Area Chamber of Commerce and school officials celebrated a ribbon cutting and grand opening July 28. The academy is the school system’s new technology center, according to officials.
The academy will prepare students for careers in technology. Funded by the Poarch Creek Indians, partnered with Coastal Alabama Community College and NAF (a national education organization), the program will offer instruction in programming, data analytics and even artificial intelligence. The facility will be equipped with state-of-the-art labs, virtual reality equipment and other high-tech resources, according to officials.
Assistant Superintendent Michele Collier said the curriculum will give students an advantage when pursuing tech careers.
“In an era driven by technology, we must equip our students with the skills and knowledge to keep up with the rapidly changing world and lead it,” Collier said in a release. “The Escambia County Schools IT Academy is born out of the vision to foster a generation of innovative thinkers, problem solvers, and tech-savvy individuals who will thrive in the digital age and enter the workforce in our community with the skills and knowledge to support local business industry.”
The academy features collaborative seating, interactive display boards and student work spaces. A dedicated teacher has been hired for the program.
Students who complete the curriculum will receive a credential and a certification for IT Help Desk.
Collier said the academy will offer something unique.
“As a community, we are investing in the future of our youth because we believe in their potential to bring about positive change, not only for themselves but for all of Escambia County,” she said. “The IT Academy is a testament to our commitment to providing the best possible education for our students and ensuring they are well-prepared for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.”
