The Atmore City Council Monday adopted a request for a proposal for operating and managing the municipal airport to SkyWarrior Flight Training Inc. of Pensacola, Fla.

The resolution, 2023-19, authorizes the city of Atmore to draft a contract between SkyWarrior Flight Training.

City Councilmember Chris Harrison asked if SkyWarrior is opening a flight school here.

Mayor Jim Staff said not only a school, but they’re aiming to go into the school, not only to get pilots, but mechanics as well.

According to city officials, SkyWarrior will also be managing the airport.

In other business, the city:

• adopted 2023-17, authorizing Staff to enter an engineering agreement with Civil Southeast LLC for a CDBG draining improvement  project;

• adopted resolution 2023-18, authorizing Staff to enter an administrative agreement with Community Development Group for the CDBG drainage improvement project.

Harrison asked if the drainage project is for the whole city.

The drainage improvement project is for Brown Street, Sims Street, Thompson Street, and Maxwell Street from Brooks Lane to Liberty Street.

The project includes putting new culverts in and making drainage up to grade.

The grant total was for $500,000, and it was administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

• adopted resolution 2023-20, authorizing the city to purchase two Ford Expeditions off of the state bid list for $59,333 each;

• adopted resolution 2023-21, authorizing the mayor to purchase a  fire pumper off contract FS-12-19 from Navco.

Staff said the new pumper keeps water in all of the other fire trucks.

“The one we have has worn out, and it’s beginning to cost us more in repairs than to buy a new one,” he said.

Fire Chief Ronald Peebles thanked the council for their support.

“Mayor and council, thank y’all from me and my guys,” Peebles said. “You don’t know how much it’s appreciated. This fire department has never had the support it has now.”

• approved Councilmember Eunice Johnson’s food drive to be held Mon., Nov. 20, at Tom Byrne Park. The drive will be held in partnership with EMJ Outreach.
