Denver, Colo. man arrested Dec. 17 on drug charges

A Denver, Colo. man was arrested Dec. 17 on drug charges, according to the Atmore Police Department.

Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Haden Smethers, 32, was arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance.

McMann said an APD patrol officer was on routine patrol at approximately 6:18 p.m. on the day of the arrest when the cashier at the Shell gas station on Highway 21 near Interstate 65 advised him of a suspicious person in the parking lot.

“The cashier pointed to a man in the parking lot, later identified as Smethers, who was acting strangely as he was walking around in the parking lot,” McMann said. “The officer contacted Smethers and attempted to communicate with him. Smethers spoke incoherently and appeared to be under the influence. The officer requested an ambulance to check Smethers well being and searched his vehicle.”

McMann said the officer then discovered approximately 1 gram of a white powdery substance that field tested positive for cocaine. Also found in the vehicle was a small amount of a green leafy substance that field tested positive for marijuana, a cigarillow container with marijuana residue and several prescription medications prescribed to Smethers.

McMann added that medics checked Smethers and pronounced he was in no distress. He was then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
