City ready in case bad weather sweeps through area

The city of Atmore is ready to go in the event bad weather sweeps across the area tonight into tomorrow morning, according to officials.
Chief Chuck Brooks said after the city council meeting that he’s been in talks with (fire) Chief (Ronald) Peebles and Calvin (Grace) with the street department.
“We’re ready to go in the vent we do have bad weather,” Brooks said. “All of the equipment is ready. All of the personnel is in place and on standby. We’re ready to go in the event that this; just pray we do not have bad weather. All points indicate that it is going to be pretty bad tonight into the morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a wind advisory has been issued for Atmore until Jan. 9 at 6 p.m.
Showers and possibly and thunderstorm are forecasted for tonight, according to the NWS. Some of the storms could be severe. The temperature will be rising to around 65 by 2 a.m., where conditions are slated to be windy with a southeast wind of 30-35 miles per hour becoming west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 50 miles per hour. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent, and new rainfall amounts between 2-3 inches are possible.
Then on Tuesday, showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 9 a.m., then a chance of showers between 9 a.m. and noon, according to NWS officials.
Some of the storms could be severe, and NWS officials said the temperature will fall to around 50 degrees by 5 p.m. Wind gudsts of 15-25 miles per hour and gusts as high as 35 miles per hour are forecasted. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent.
Brooks said they’re asking those who don’t have to be on the streets to stay home.
“Emergency services will be available if you need them,” he said. “At this time, there’s no shelter. We will assess that, and that’ll be a decision that’s made later on. All city serfvices are ready in the event we do have bad weather.”
