The Atmore City Council approved a workshop to be held at a future date to address the need for a homeless shelter during its meeting on Monday.

District 3 Councilmember Eunice Johnson said as of late, the city has experienced cold weather, and there are people here who don’t have a sufficient places to live.

“We are concerned about our homeless people,” she said. “

Johnson added that it was important to her to bring this matter to the attention of the community.

During the audience portion of the meeting, Sandra Gray with the Red Cross, said they had a lot of phone calls from people who were cold, asking for a warming shelter.

In other business, the city:

• approved the Atmore Community Hospital Foundation’s use of Heritage Park for its Gumbo Cook-Off on April 6, 2024; and,
• approved the Autism Awareness Walk to be held April 13, at 10 a.m. The walk will begin on North Main Street.
