The weather played out right, but the W.S. Neal Blue Eagles spoiled the season opener for the Escambia County Blue Devils on Monday afternoon at Tom Byrne Park.

The Blue Devils (0-1, 0-0) opened the 2011 season hoping to notch a win over the Blue Eagles (1-0, 0-0), but could not keep the Blue Eagles off the basepath falling 19-4.

Escambia County was hurt by pitching and errors in the loss with several Blue Eagles scoring on wild pitches by the pitcher or passed balls by the catcher.

With sophomore TyQuaiz George starting on the mound for the Blue Devils, W.S. Neal took their turn at the plate first.

While things started sour for George, the Blue Eagles took advantage of the Blue Devils’ misfortune scoring six runs to open the game. Their lone hit in inning came by way of a two-RBI double by Damion Williams (1-for-2).

The Blue Devils showed signs of life in the bottom of the first trailing 6-0 with seniors Nick Flowers (2-for-2, 2R) and Marshall Rolin (1-for-2, R) coming across the plate to score.

The Blue Eagles added to their four-run lead in the top of the second as Reid Johnson (0-for-1) and Keith Bradley (1-for-2) each scored runs. Johnson scored his run on a balk by George, while Bradley crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Things would not get better for the Blue Devils in the bottom half of the inning as they went three up and three down.

W.S. Neal put together another six-run inning in the top of the third this time with Nick Flowers on the mound for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Eagles would get a mix of walks and hits to score their runs with Hunter Mullins, Johnson, Logan Williamson, Bradley, Brian Settle and Williams all making it around the base path.

Escambia County would push to get runners across the plate in the bottom of the third with only Flowers finding success.

Flowers would open the inning with a walk and find his way to third base on a steal and wild pitch where he would score on a hit turned error by Keon McCants.

With a 14-3 lead, the Blue Eagles again added runs in the top of the fourth with Mullins, Christian Purvis and Johnson all crossing home plate.

The Blue Devils would put a fourth run on the board in the fourth inning with Tanner Smith reaching base after being hit by a pitch. He was knocked in by a single by Flowers.

W.S. Neal would add two final runs in the top of the fifth with Dylan Godwin and Mullins scoring to end the game on a 10-run rule after the Blue Devils could not cut the deficit down.
