Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said Denis Winjum, 45, was taken into custody on Independence Day, and transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.

McMann said the arrest stemmed after APD officers responded to the area of Highway 31 and Medical Park Drive in reference to a reckless driver on May 31 at approximately 7:10 p.m.

One of the responding officers observed the vehicle at Highway 31 and Presley Street and noticed the vehicle was failing to maintain its lane of travel,” McMann said. “The officer contacted the driver (Winjum).”

McMann added that when the officer contacted Winjum, he detected a strong odor of alcohol and other indications that she was under the influence.

“Winjum was asked to do field sobriety tests, which she failed,” he said. “She was arrested and charged with DUI and was transported to the Atmore Municipal Jail.”

McMann said the on-call investigator reviewed Winjum’s criminal history and discovered that she has had four convictions for DUI in the last 10 years. The investigator obtained a felony DUI warrant for her arrest. McMann said Winjum’s case will be processed through the Escambia County District Court instead of Atmore Municipal Court.
