Blue Devils rout Monroe County 33-8 Friday night

Escambia County bounced back and defeated Monroe County 33-8 tonight to win its first game of the season in Atmore.

Atmore strutted out to a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter, and went ahead 19-0 at the break. ECHS led 26-0 in the early ticks of the fourth.

Tonight’s victory comes after a season-opening 30-26 loss to Alabama Christian.

Blue Devils head football coach Vincent Harris said the boys responded well.

“We’ve got a young team, and we’re replacing a lot of senior leadership,” Harris said. “I’m just proud of the way they played tonight. They played hard through a lot of adversity.

“I’m just proud of them,” he said.

Blue Devils quarterback Jamarion Robinson accounted for three touchdowns during the victory.

Robinson connected with Marrion Hooks twice in the first half, completing scoring passes of 24 and approximately 55 yards. His third came on a 3-yard rush early in the fourth.

During the game, the offense got off to a slow start.

Harris said the coaches had inspire the players to play better.

“It was about getting on some tail,” the coach said. “There weren’t a whole lot of adjustments.”

Defensively, the Blue Devils stepped up to the plate.

Gabe Hooks grabbed an errant pass in the second quarter and ran it back 10 yards for a touchdown, and later recovered a fumble late in the third.

Escambia County’s last touchdown of the night came on a 67-yard rush from Cali McCants.

Monroe County didn’t go away quietly in the end, scoring a 7-yard touchdown reception with 28.7 ticks left.

Next week, the Blue Devils (1-1) host No. 1 Jackson to start Class 4A, Region 1 play.
