Escambia Academy fell 22-6 to Morgan Academy Friday night in region action at Bachelor Field in Canoe.

The Cougars (2-4, 1-2 in AISA Class 3A, Region 2) trailed 22-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Cougars head football coach Larry Nichols said this game was a tough loss.

“We had a couple injured players, and we had one that got injured right before the game,” Nichols said. “He couldn’t play. Our starting middle linebacker (Logan Madden). That really put a dagger on the night for the team.”

Nichols said Madden hurt his wrist messing around prior to the contest.

EA is already in the postseason. The Cougars face Monroe Academy on Oct. 18 on the road.

Nichols said they’re aiming to beat Monroe to get a better seed in the playoffs.

“It’s going to come down to whoever gets that third spot,” the coach said.

The Cougars’ only touchdown of the night came on a fumble.

EA’s Cade Leachman grabbed a fumble from a back-tracking Senators team deep on the visitors side and ran it back a short distance with 11:02 left in the fourth quarter.

Later in the game, the Cougars forced a turnover on downs with 7:26 left, and quarterback Ronta Watson converted a fourth-and-eight with 4 minutes left to keep the drive going.
