An Escambia County Sheriffs Office K-9 died after being left in a vehicle, according to officials.
Sheriff Heath Jackson said in a release that the incident occurred on Oct. 11, after the deputy finished a night shift.
Jackson added that the deputy left the K-9 in the car.
“The deputy later found the dog deceased upon waking,” Jackson said. “Following a preliminary investigation, the deputy involved has been terminated. We are committed to ensuring accountability and transparency in this matter, and a thorough investigation is ongoing. Additionally, the case will be presented to a grand jury for further review.”
Jackson expressed remorse for the incident.
“Our K-9s are invaluable members of our law enforcement family, dedicated to serving and protecting our community,” he said. “Their well-being is of utmost importance, and we take this situation very seriously.
“We are reviewing our protocols to prevent such a tragedy from happening in the future,” he said. “Our commitment to the safety and care of all our personnel, including our K-9s, remains unwavering.”
