UPDATE: This post has been updated to include Bishop’s job title and status at Fountain Correctional Facility.
A Fountain Correctional Facility employee was arrested for attempting to smuggle narcotics and contraband into the facility Dec. 5, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.
Public Information Officer Kelly Betts said in a release that Vincent Bishop was arrested and charged with drug trafficking (flakka), possession of marijuana I, attempting to commit a controlled substance crime, prohibited activities (cell phones in a correctional facility) and attempting to promote prison contraband I. Bishop works as a drug treatment counselor at the facility, and was placed on mandatory leave.
Betts said K-9 personnel, following an ongoing investigation, observed suspicious activity involving inmates attempting to access a parking lot near Bishop’s vehicle.
“A traffic stop was conducted with K-9 personnel and local law enforcement,” Betts said. “K-9 got a positive alert for narcotics. A subsequent search revealed marijuana, flakka, tobacco, cell phones and charging cables concealed under the truck. Bishop, who refused to resign from his position, and is now on mandatory leave, was arrested and transported to the Escambia County Detention Facility (in Brewton).”
