Flomaton head football coach Doug Vickery announced tonight that he’s retiring from coaching in the state of Alabama during the Hurricanes’ football banquet.
Vickery has coached at FHS for 19 years, and has compiled a 130-82 record, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society’s website.
“Flomaton has been so good for me,” Vickery said. “It’s been such a blessing for me and my family. All of my kids have graduated from Flomaton High School. My three sons actually played football for me. Being able to coach my three sons was priceless. You can’t get that time back.”
Vickery said when he came to FHS 19 years ago, he set about changing the culture at the school. Since then, the Hurricanes have made five quarterfinal appearances and have won one state championship.
Vickery gave credit to his assistant coaches, including Scott Robinson, Keith Nall, Kurt Bell and Karl Smith. He also thanked Buck Powell and Scott Hammond for taking the chance on a 36-year-old guy who was coaching at Florala.
“I give God all of the glory,” he said.
When asked what’s next, Vickery said he’s got some things he’s looking into.
