A Pensacola, Fla. man and woman were arrested Dec. 12 on multiple drug charges, according to the Atmore Police Department.
Public Information Officer Sgt. Darrell McMann said in a release that Clifford Lewis, 59, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, drug trafficking, unlawful possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia; and Lea Mathis, 35, was arrested and charged with drug trafficking, unlawful possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
McMann said at approximately 11:25 p.m. on Thursday, an APD officer conducted a traffic stop on Highway 21 after observing a vehicle swerving. The officer then contacted Lewis, the driver, and Mathis, the passenger.
“During the officers interaction with Lewis, the officer noticed he appeared to be under the influence and requested Lewis perform field sobriety tests, which he failed,” McMann said. “While checking Mathis’ identification, the officer discovered that she has several outstanding misdemeanor warrants with APD.”
McMann said during the field sobriety tests, a K-9 was deployed and alerted on the vehicle.
“A probable cause search of the vehicle revealed over 10 grams of methamphetamine, several grams of fentanyl, a digital scale and items used to ingest narcotics,” he said.
Both were then transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
