A family-oriented Escambia County Lady Blue Devils basketball squad is set to begin area play next week as they face W.S. Neal at home.
ECHS (7-2) will play the Lady Blue Eagles on Wed., Jan. 8 to begin Class 4A, Area 2 play. Tip off will be at around 6 p.m.
Lady Blue Devils basketball coach Devon Robinson said the team is young, but they’ve been working hard on playing together.
“As a team I always tell them we could be dangerous,” Robinson said. “We’re family oriented. They push each other until they can’t anymore.”
Robinson said he believes the girls are doing well, and it’s still early on the road to success.
“They know each and every day they’ve got to put in the work,” he said.
Robinson said the girls have worked hard on their defensive play.
“Defense is the main thing,” he said. “We pride ourselves on defense, and to keep other teams’ scores low.”
So far this season, the Lady Blue Devils have averaged giving up 35.7 points per game.
On area play against WSN and Jackson, Robinson said they’re not taking any opponent lightly.
“We’re going to keep a foot on the gas at all times,” he said. “Anybody can be beat.”
Robinson said both teams are fast, and play fundamental basketball.
As far as a goal this season, Robinson said they set a team goal to make it to the Sweet 16, a feat they fell short of last season.
