Gov. Don Siegelman has awarded $126, 045 to reduce domestic violence in Escambia County. Siegelman notified Larry White, commission chairman, that the grant had been approved.
The funds will be used by the Escambia County Domestic Violence Crime Unit to investigate and prosecute domestic violence cases. Local matching funds of $42,015 have been committed to the project.
In addition, the unit will support victims during court proceedings and refer victims who are not in need of emergency shelter to agencies for job training and placement, stress management and other assistance. The unit also plans to connect to the Alabama Criminal Justice Information System to track arrests, violations of protection orders and convictions of violent offenders.
