A Monday deadline will end an opportunity for those affected by the April storms that swept through Alabama including portions of Escambia County.

Jim Homstad, FEMA public affairs specialist, visited Brewton recently to determine assistance needed within the county. That assistance will be available if application deadline is met by those in need.

“The last day to apply for federal disaster assistance from FEMA and the U.S. Small Business Administration is Monday, June 27,” Homstad said. “Anyone who has not registered with FEMA for disaster aid, has questions about their application or seeks more information about recovery programs should call FEMA’s toll-free helpline.”

FEMA, federal partners and Alabama Emergency Management Agency are encouraging those affected by storms between April 15 and May 31 to register for assistance, Homstad said.

“We encourage any person or business owner who sustained storm-related damage from those storms to register quickly for assistance,” Homstad said. “There are 43 counties in Alabama that have been designated for federal disaster assistance.”

So far in Escambia County, FEMA officials have taken 80 applications for assistance. Through those applications, $10,060 has been approved for housing assistance by FEMA with other need assistance approved for funding by FEMA and the state. Individual and household program totals for the most recent application period have totaled just over $11,000 in Escambia County, Homstad said.

Through its Individuals and Households Program FEMA has approved $56.5 million in grants for Alabamians and combined with $42 million in low-interest disaster loans approved by the Small Business Administration the total federal assistance for state residents to date is more than $98 million.

Those seeking assistance through FEMA should call the helpline at 1-900-621-FEMA. Lines are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week, Homstad said.
