The report of a stolen truck Monday morning has put law enforcement agencies on alert in Alabama and Florida for an escaped Alabama prison inmate.
Brian Corbitt, public information officer for the Alabama Department of Corrections, said the escaped state prisoner was with the Atmore Corrections Work Center, also known as the J.O. Davis Work Release Center near Fountain Prison in Atmore.
William Paul Riley, 38, is described as a white male, 175 pounds with brown eyes and blonde hair.
Escambia County Sheriffs Department officials along with other law enforcement agency officers aided in the search Monday and remained on alert Tuesday.
Mike Lambert, chief deputy for the Escambia County Sheriffs Department, said the truck reported stolen went missing from the Escambia County Workshop on Pea Ridge Road Monday morning.
“We received a call that a truck had been stolen from the county maintenance facility at about 8:05 a.m. Monday,” Lambert said. “Witnesses said the vehicle was taken by an inmate on work release at that location. The truck belonged to an employee there.”
Lambert said the truck was a red 1993 Nissan with a toolbox on the back and white markings along the side.
“We received a report that the truck was seen in the vicinity of Jay, Fla., Monday,” Lambert said. “We are still investigating and assisting in this case.”
Corbitt said Riley was serving a 15-year sentence for a felony conviction of theft second-degree theft of property and second-degree receiving stolen property. He was due to be released from his sentence in March 2015. He would have been eligible for a parole hearing in March 2013.
No additional information concerning the search for Riley was available as of press time Tuesday.
Anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of Riley or the stolen vehicle is asked to contact the Escambia County Sheriffs Department at 867-0304 or 368-4779 or any local or state law enforcement agency by calling 911.
