On Sunday, May 25, the Greater Escambia Council for the Arts will hold tryouts for its summer musical, Fiddler On the Roof.
Fiddler, written by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, is the story of Tevye, a turn of the century Russian Jew who strives to raise his family in the traditional way in the face of the changing times. The musical is based on a short story by Sholom Aleichem entitled "Tevye and His Daughters." The musical includes several famous musical numbers, including the title song, "Sunrise, Sunset," "Tradition," and "If I were a Rich Man."
This summer's production will be a change from those of the past two summers in that Fiddler requires a more adult cast. While the casts of Annie and Oliver were made largely of children, the principle characters in Fiddler are adults and teens. However, children are still needed for the production and are encouraged to audition.
Those interested in auditioning need to come prepared to read or sing a small selection. In addition to the principle parts, singers, dancers, and actors will be needed. The play requires nearly one hundred parts, so as many as audition may be a part of the production.
Those interested in being a part of the production in offstage roles should also come to auditions. Anyone interested in stage design, artwork, publicity, costuming, lighting, sound, being a stage hand, or simply seeing what community theatre is all about is welcome.
Auditions will be held at 2 p.m. at the Atmore Lions Community Center. The production is slated for late July.
