Obituaries for Feb 29, 2004 edition of the Atmore Advance
Willie George Dailey
Rev. Willie George Dailey, 85, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.
He was a native of Atmore for many years and has attended school in Monroe County. He was a member of Zion Star AME Zion Church and was a retired laborer with Ingalls Shipyard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harkless and Ollie Naomi Dailey; his first wife, Mattie Dailey; two sons, George, Johnny E. and Don E. Dailey; eight of his sisters and brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Dailey of Atmore; seven daughters, Verna Dailey of Mobile, Elizabeth Knight of Boston, Mass., Barbara Dailey and Celestine Dailey both of Philadelphia, Pa., Maragaret Walton and Frances Dailey both of Atmore and Diane Dailey of Pascagoula, Miss.; three sons, Willie James Dailey of Mobile, Theodore Dailey of Boston, and Mack Dailey of Pascagoula; two sisters, Rosa Lee Jones of Atmore and Fronnie Sellers of Pascagoula; two brothers, Harkless Dailey Jr. of Philadelphia and Paul Dailey of Moss Point, Miss.; 50 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 28 at 11 a.m. at Greater Mt. Triumph Baptist Church.Bishop Willie L. Williams officiated. Burial was at Fairview Cemeter.
Turner Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Joseph Wayne Griffis
Mr. Joseph Wayne Griffis, 53, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004, in Jay.
Mr. Griffis was a native of McDavid, Fla. and a resident of Flomaton for the past 30 years. He attended Gospel Light Temple.
He was preceded in death by his father, J.D. Griffis; nephew, David Griffis; and mother-in-law, Mazie Hanks.
He was survived by his wife, Mary Griffis of Flomaton; his mother, Mrs. Ruby Lee Griffis of McDavid; son, Johnny and Joley Griffis of Flomaton; daughter, Misty Dawn Griffis and Sammy Portwood of Flomaton; four brothers, Dennis Griffis, Danny Griffis, Tony Griffis and Gary Griffis all of McDavid; three sisters, Brenda Hanks of Century, Annette Lambeth of Atmore, and Patsy Griffis of McDavid; two grandchildren, Tristan Portwood and John Griffis; special aunt, Della Godwin.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 27 at 2 p.m. at Eastside Chapel with Bro. Wallace Reed and Bro. Joe Eddie Mack officiating. Burial followed at Godwin Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Chad Hanks, Howard Gilmore, Jeff Johnson, Jimmy Johnson, Mike Gilmore, Greg Sims, Rodney Griffis and Jamie Wagers. Honorary pallbearers were Keith Griffis and Billy Sims.
Eastside Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
John Wesley Holder Sr.
John Wesley Holder Sr., 75, of Huntsville died Monday, February 23, 2004, at home.
He joined the merchant marines during World War II at the age of 16. He served his country in the armed services and worked for Ampex Corporation as regional sales manager. For the past 25 years he was an independent business owner in the computer storage industry.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Holder; daughter, Betty and Chandler Hall; son, John and Tamara Holder Jr. of Covington, Gra.; grandchildren, Whitney Newsom, Noelle Holder and Katherine Hall; brothers, Alex and Martha Holder of Perdido Key, Fla. and Jim and Lois of Orange Beach; sisters, Nell Holder of Mesa, Ariz., Helen Day and William McKenzie of Monroeville and Vera and Charles Lindauer of Theodore; many nieces, nephews and friends.
A viewing at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home was held Friday, February 27. Burial was at Oakhill Cemetery in Atmore.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Family Care or Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund.
Laymon Jordan Sr.
Mr. Laymon Jordan Sr., 80, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at his residence.
He was a native of Red Level, Ala., and a resident of Century for many years. He attended school in Conecuh County and Carver High School in Century. He was a member of Bethel AF&M Church of God in Century. He was a retired millwright in the saw mill industry. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Inez Jordan; his parents, Abner and Lottie Jordan.
He is survived by six daughters, Barbara Brown of White Plains, N.Y., Delores Wallace of Victorville, Calif., Samantha and Talit Azam, Sylvia Jordan, Oranetta Jordan all of Orlando, Fla., and Michelle Jordan-Phifer of Century; three sons, Laymon and Pacita Jordan, Jr. of Victorville, Harold E. and Jackie Jordan of Mobile and Charles Jordan of Century; two sisters, Evelyn Gamble of Albion, Mich. and Anna Robbins of Rialto, Calif.; 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral Services wre held Saturday, February 28 at 2:30 p.m. at Bethel AF&M Church of God in Century. The Rev. Russell Fountain, Pastor, officiated. Burial was at Century Cemetery.
Turner Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Cleveland Tunstall Jr.,
Cleveland Tunstall Jr., 60, Saturday, February 21, 2004 at his residence.
He was a native of Tensaw and a resident of Atmore for many years. He graduated from Douglassville High School in Bay Minette and was employed as a manager with Gray Salt Super Market.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Josephine Gallery and Hannah Bonns Tunstall; brothers, Sylvester Williams, Theodore Williams, Wilson Williams, Ezekiel Williams, Emanuel Tunstall and Hussell Tunstall.
He is survived by his wife, Marsha Tunstall of Atmore; two daughters, LaTasha Tunstall of Detroit, Mich. and Crystal Collins of Daphne; son, Timothy Flowers of Detroit, Mich.; sister, Lillie M. Mitchel of Stockton; brothers, Major and Daisy Tunstall and John and DeAnna Tunstall all of Tensaw.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, February 28 at 1 p.m. at Little Zion United Methodist Church in Tensaw. Dr. Hattie Bishop, Pastor of Deliverance Ministry of Jesus Christ officiated.
Burial followed at Tensaw Memorial Garden in Tensaw.
Pallbearers were friends and family members.
