Seventh grade humanities students at Perdido Middle School were recently given a first hand look at how and what it takes to become a reporter.

Tina Covington, from the Mobile Press-Register, visited their class and shared with the students about her 22 years of working in the field of journalism.  She not only told them of the educational process, but how a teacher in high school encouraged her to pursue writing as a career.

Students of Gerri McDonald’s are making preparations for their up and coming interviews of Veterans from the surrounding area.  Each year as a part of their service-learning project, humanities students will help with the annual Salute to Veterans.  The video recorded interviews will be a part of the pre-program for this year.

The information and suggestions that were shared by Covington included:  asking open-ended questions; listening and taking notes even though you are recording; making sure your camera is well charged; Covington also brought each of the students a notebook and pen to assist them in their future interviews.

Perdido Elementary/Middle School’s annual Salute to Veterans will be held on Wednesday, November 9 at 8:30 a.m. in the school’s gym.  All Veterans are invited.  For more information please call the school at 937-8456
