More than two years after committing armed robbery at an Atmore bank, a Canoe man was sentenced to serve 10 years in prison.
Chad Floyd Jeter of Canoe was sentenced to 10 years in a federal prison Friday for the armed robbery of the First National Bank and Trust in downtown Atmore in May of 2009. The sentence was imposed after Jeter pled guilty to charges of bank robbery with a weapon and using a firearm in furtherance of a crime in violence.
Federal Judge Kristi K. Dubose sentenced Jeter to 37 months in prison for the bank robbery, and an additional 84 months for the use of a .22 caliber rifle in the crime.
Jeter eluded authorities for several days following the robbery before being taken into custody in Florida after he attacked a law enforcement officer.
Authorities in Atmore were able to identify Jeter several hours after the crime through the use of the bank’s surveillance system.
A subsequent search of his mobile home turned up “threatening” letters blaming the U.S. military for the loss of jobs.
Atmore Public Safety Director Glenn Carlee said maps of military bases were also recovered from Jeter’s home during the investigation. The discovery of those maps lead authorities to believe he had intentions to harm or kill others. Letters found in the home also contained statements from Jeter claiming he would kill law enforcement agents.
In May of 2010 Jeter was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, following a psychiatric evaluation, and it was determined that he was not competent to stand trial.
Following treatment, two subsequent evaluations deemed Jeter competent to stand trial.
