This morning as I walked out my door heading to work I noticed a slight overcast above and thought to myself this is going to be a good day. Needless to say I didn't pay attention to any weather reports and like most of you began to wonder if the rain was intending to stop anytime soon.
This latter thought did not ease into my conscious thought until after I heard a scream come from our editorial department. With a spring to my step I found the editorial department beginning to sink. It might be an honorable gesture for the captain to go down with the sinking ship, but this captain wasn't in the Navy and had no intention for the ship to sink.
Rapidly we began to brain-storm calling area businesses that might have a stock of sandbags nearby. Unfortunately that turned up few to no results. We were able however to rent a huge "vacuum" type machine to at least suck up any water already in the building and keep it from continuing to spread.
While venturing out to pick up this machine from a local business, I noticed something spectacular. This giving of one's self for the betterment of the community is still going strong. Residents were out in the streets working hard to unclog drains along Main Street and some of the streets branching off. No one asked the people for help, they just did it. This atmosphere of benefaction is one of Atmore's greatest qualities and makes days such as this Saturday so enjoyable.
As I write this column, Williams Station Day is coming up this weekend and in my opinion is the perfect time to host such a festival. Reminding of our legacy, the day offers us a great time to come out and fellowship with one another. Maybe speak to that cousin we haven't seen often enough or show our kids those hot rods from the good ole days.
No matter the reason, make sure to come out and support Williams Station Day and as the slogan says, come out and meet some good friends, enjoy some good food and have a lot of good fun.
