A man sentenced to life in prison lost the only thing he had left to lose yesterday after law enforcement shot and killed him, less than 30 minutes after he ran over an officer in Chilton County.
Ronald Stallworth, 45, sentenced to life in prison at Hollman Prison, stole a St. Clair Deputy's car and revolver on Alabama 145, just past Lessie's Restaurant in Clanton, just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
As a parting shot, Stallworth struck the St. Clair officer with his own car, as he sped away.
Chilton Deputies and Alabama State Troopers began the pursuit as the subject headed south on Interstate-65.
The injured deputy was evaluated at the 212 Chevron station in Clanton and transported to Baptist Shelby with multiple stab-wounds, which came from a nail law enforcement said Stallworth had concealed.
The chase reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour before the man wrecked the vehicle on Herron Street, just off I-65 in Montgomery and began to fire at law enforcement.
Montgomery Police Officers eventually shot and killed Stallworth just before 3 p.m., but not before he shot one deputy in the hand.
Interstate-65 was closed in both directions while law enforcement worked the crime scene.
The freeway was reopened about 7 p.m.
Stallworth was convicted of murder in Macon County and kidnapping in Lee County, in 1989 previously published sources state. He was also convicted of assault.
He was being transported to St. Clair County to face capital murder charges for involvement in a fellow inmate's death at the St. Clair Correctional facility.
