As the search for a new principal at Escambia County High School continues, there has been much speculation throughout the city about who the next one may be.
Various sources have told the Advance that the faculty and much of the town would prefer to see current acting principal Kyle Ferguson remain in that position fulltime.
During our travels through the high school over the past several months, it was clear to us who was actually in charge at the school and who had genuine respect from the students, and that man was Kyle Ferguson.
With graduation only nine days away, and a new school year only three months away, a new choice for principal looms over all else. Whoever the choice is will have the responsibility of not only keeping the children here in Atmore safe for seven hours a day, but also steering their course toward colleges and careers.
The students at ECHS have not been given a fair shake for many years now, and if the Escambia County Board of Education would like to live up to the first poster one sees when walking toward the office at ECHS – that being a "No Child Left Behind" poster – then whichever candidate is chosen should be the absolute best possible available to the school.
While we here at the Advance would be foolish to endorse a candidate for principal at a high school, we realize that many qualified candidates may apply for the job. We believe all candidates should be given a fair shake, but we also feel that it would be beneficial to all to keep a bright mind like Mr. Ferguson available at the school.
