No glory for state champs

To the Editor:
I am a proud mother of an 11-year-old son who is on the state champ team. I am also a proud citizen of the town of Atmore and am confused at why there has been nothing done to help celebrate this outstanding milestone reached by the 11- and 12-year-old teams this year. These boys played their hearts out in representation of our town and deserve something in return.
I realize that most of our townspeople had rather hear about football than baseball, but do most of you realize that it has been since 1961 that a 12-and-under team has been a champion from the town of Atmore? Let alone the fact that we have two teams that made it that far?
The boys had a cheer that kept them going and it went like this: "Who are we" and the answer was Atmore! Now if these children who gave up most of their summer to represent the city of Atmore can cheer the words Atmore, then why can't the citizens of Atmore show a little more respect to these boys?
I would like to personally thank all of the coaches from both teams (and their wives for their support) and the many sponsors that we hear about having, but have no true idea who they really are, and the people who gave us donations to see these boys through. As parents we actually foot the bill for all the expenses including paying to watch our own children play these games.
I also want to thank the many companies here in the community for allowing their employees off to follow the children and their dreams. You know, these children and their families gave up a lot more than most of us know to get these to teams to where they are today and we as a community owe them at least a victory parade or some type reward for their hard work and loyalty to the town of Atmore.
