Our View
More than 40 percent of the armed forces in Iraq are National Guard or reserve forces. Alabama is among the top states to contribute to the war effort with over 2,000 of our soldiers currently in Iraq.
Our troops in Atmore contributed largely to the war effort.
Guard units are often considered "part-time" soldiers or "hobby soldiers" but the 711th had to stay away from their families for nearly two years.
These "part-time" soldiers served our country in Iraq, often at the expense of missing their children's birth or at the expense of their marriages.
These troops, like their fathers and grandfathers before them, made sacrifices for their country.
As Memorial Day approaches we should sacrifice just a little bit of our time to remember our 711th troops as well as the other men and women who have sacrificed for us in past wars. We should also remember the troops still serving in foreign lands.
