Devils hit streak

Escambia County Blue Devil Fred Knight has led his team to five consecutive victories since the team began the season 1-4. The Blue Devils defeated Baldwin County and Monroe County last weekend.

In a rematch from a battle in Bay Minette on Nov. 19, the Escambia County Blue Devils extended their winning streak to five games as they defeated the Baldwin County Tigers 60-56 at Escambia County High School on Saturday.

The contest was tightly contested throughout the game, but a strong second quarter proved to be the difference giving the Blue Devils (6-4, 0-0) a comfortable halftime margin.

In the first quarter, the Blue Devils and Tigers were in a dogfight as they battled on both ends of the court with the Tigers grabbing a 15-12 lead.

Escambia County erupted in the second quarter as they dominated the period on offense and defense as they outscored Baldwin County 20-7 to go into the break ahead 32-22.

Following halftime, the Tigers clawed back into the game, but were unable to get past the Blue Devils on the scoreboard.

Baldwin County began to cut into the Blue Devils’ lead in the third quarter as they put together another strong run outscoring ECHS 18-15 to trail 47-40 heading into the final quarter.

The Blue Devils held their own in the final eight minutes of play as they scored 13 points, but gave up 16 to Baldwin County with the time being on their side to give them a 60-56 win.

Blue Devils guard Fred Knight led Escambia County in the victory posting a team-high 21 points. Knight also had four rebounds and an assist.

Tony McAroy had 12 points for the Blue Devils, while Desmond Williams added in 11. McAroy had a team-leading five assists and also had five rebounds. Williams finished with four rebounds and three blocks.

Tyrell Ford recorded five points; Dalvin Craft posted four and Desmond Johnson tossed in three during the contest. Craft led ECHS on the boards pulling down six rebounds.

Escambia County finally found the recipe for success as they defeated the Monroe County Tigers for the first time this season 58-52 last Friday at Escambia County High School in Atmore.

The Blue Devils (5-4, 0-0) were defeated in two earlier match ups with the Tigers with one coming in Monroeville and the other in a tournament game in Greenville.

The home team had a firm grip on the game from the start as they overpowered the Tigers and pulled out to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter.

Escambia County continued to pour points on the board and push Monroe County around as they won the second quarter 19-7 to go into halftime leading 34-13.

Following halftime, the Tigers tried to sneak back into the game, but the Blue Devils never early lead helped them hold the advantage.

In the third quarter, Monroe County finally found some offense as they outscored the Blue Devils 21-13.

Escambia County looked to be in danger of losing its lead in the final quarter as the Tigers again outscored them 18-11, but time was on their side as they held on for the 58-52 win.

Blue Devil Fred Knight was the leading scorer in the win posting 21 points. He also added two rebounds and two assists.
Tony McAroy added 11 points for the Blue Devils, while Dalvin Craft tossed in nine of his own.
