An Atmore man charged with one count of elderly abuse and neglect is free on bond after being arrested for leaving his 95-year-old mother in a hot car last Wednesday.
According to officials with the Baldwin County Jail, Will Thomas Brown, 68, of 314 Nathan Road in Atmore was released on a $5,000 bond Thursday. He is still awaiting a hearing.
A press release issued by the Bay Minette Police Department stated that at approximately 11:35 a.m. officers responded to a call of an elderly person locked in a car and unattended at the Wal-Mart located at 701 McMeans Avenue. Upon arrival officers found a 95-year-old white female that had been left in a 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis with the windows up and the vehicle turned off. She was later identified as Annie R. Brown of Atmore.
Medical personnel were called to the scene and took the victim to the North Baldwin Infirmary for treatment.
Police estimated that the temperature inside the vehicle was over 110 degrees. Witnesses of the incident stated that the woman had been sitting in the parked car for approximately 45 minutes before authorities were notified.
Upon future evaluation, officers observed that the woman had numerous visible bruises, contusions and lacerations to her skin and that she had lost control of her bodily functions.
Will Thomas Brown was later arrested and charged with one count of elderly abuse and neglect in connection with the incident. The charges are a Class B felony with a possible penalty of two years to 20 years in prison.
