Right now in Escambia County all eyes may be focused squarely on Monday’s BCS National Title game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers, but just around the bend is the biggest game of them all – the Super Bowl, and a local cooking team is currently prepping to cook massive amounts of food to sell by game time and for a good cause.

The award winning Wild Bunch Cooking team, led by Atmore’s John and Kathy Swift, will be selling whole Boston Butts and racks of ribs with all proceeds going to benefit United Cerebral Palsy of Mobile.

UCP is a non-profit organization helping people with physical and mental disabilities find employment and in 2011 the group began operating in Escambia County.

John Swift said the opportunity to cook food to benefit UCP is a chance for him and his wife to do something they enjoy while helping a cause they believe in.

“They are the reason that we started profession barbeque cooking,” Swift said. “(UCP) wanted to have a contest in Mobile and they wanted to have an anchor team, so we just got to be buddies with them.”

Swift said his team has continued to support UCP every year since their first encounter, cooking several times a year to benefit the group.

“People ask me ‘why do you do it for them’,” Swift said. “I tell them because we don’t have Cerebral Palsy. We are fortunate. And so we can do it.”

Orders for the Super Bowl sale can be placed anytime before January 23 and may be picked up at Swift Supply in Atmore Friday, Feb. 3 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Whole Boston Butts are $30 and ribs are $20 per rack. This year’s sale will also feature the new “Wild Bunch All Purpose Seasoning” on sale for $10 per shaker. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted forms of payment.
