Atmore man beat with ax

A Bratt, Fla. resident is behind bars after beating an Atmore man with an ax following an altercation Friday morning on 2nd Avenue in Atmore.
According to Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith, Robert Keith Bryan, 41, of 3840 Max Road in Bratt is being held in the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton on second-degree assault charges with a bond of $100,000.
Atmore Police Department officers responded to a call at 9:30 a.m. in the 100 block of 2nd Avenue in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival, officers observed two males on the front porch of the residence.
Brooks Whitehead was found lying on the front porch with multiple head injuries. Also on the porch was Bryan.
According to his statement, Whitehead indicated that Bryan had assaulted him with an ax. Officers later arrested Bryan and charged him with second-degree assault and transported him to the Atmore Police Department without incident. He was later transported to the county jail.
Kelley's Ambulance transported Whitehead to Atmore Community Hospital for treatment of the head injuries sustained during the altercation. He was treated and released.
