Doubleheaders can be fun, or they can be disastrous. For the Escambia County Lady Blue Devils softball team last Friday was a blast.
And blast they did, winning 18-5 and 15-0 for a clean sweep in their doubleheader against the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles.
"They have fairly young pitchers and our girls walked a lot," ECHS head coach Jeff Haney said. "The high point of the game was our solid defense."
Haney said the way his girls responded in the first game to a three-run first inning was also a key to the game. In the bottom of the inning, when a lot of teams would give up, his girls answered with a seven-run inning to grab the lead 7-3. They never relinquished the lead after that.
Brooke Bell grabbed the win for ECHS on the mound.
In the second game Raven Culliver pitched a shutout and had four strikeouts in the three-inning game. The game was shortened because the Lady Devils scored their 15th run in the bottom of the third and the mercy rule is 15.
"Once again we played really good defense," Haney said. "We played great on defense and we did a good job running the bases. When we had the opportunities, we took advantage of them."
The Lady Devils have a busy week ahead of them. They host Clarke County Monday, Northview Tuesday and rival T.R. Miller Thursday.
"We are getting ready for the next three games," Haney said. "Northview beat us good the first time and we want to defend our diamond in that matchup and Miller is always a good rivalry-type game. These girls are always up for that game."
