The tired clich/, defense wins championships, is one saying that the Escambia County Blue Devils will take to heart. In the annual Blue vs. White game May 5, the Blue Devils looked strong defensively, but the offense struggled at times as the blue team won 44-30.
"In the first quarter we had our first team defense out there and they looked good," ECHS head coach Kyle Davis said. "And our offense looked like they needed to get some more experience under their belts. But I am confident they will work hard and be ready for the season."
The blue team represented the defense and the white team represented the offense. The intensity of both sides could be felt as helmets crashed for the first time in a real-game like situation.
The offense was given the normal six points for a touchdown and two points for a successful conversion and the defense was given one point for a stop on fourth down, three points for a fumble recovery and three points for a fumble return for a touchdown.
Davis said he is not worried about how the offense played in the game because he said it will all come together when the season starts in the fall.
"The bottom line is that we are given three weeks to practice in the spring and we will evaluate what we need to work on and get better," he said. "This game went about how we expected it to go," Davis said. "We are definitely a lot better than we were at this time last year."
On May 12, Big Blue will travel to Wetumpka for a spring jamboree against Wetumpka High School and Anniston High School.
To raise money for the football program the Blue Devils will host a two-man scramble golf tournament at the Atmore Country Club June 16. Cost for the event is $100 per team.
Davis said door prizes will be available and trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place teams. Food will also be available at the function.
