It is almost time for the inaugural induction class of the Atmore Area Hall of Fame to take their place on the walls of the Atmore Public Library. The HOF committee met Oct. 5 to finalize the details of the Nov. 11 ceremony at the Atmore Area YMCA and Community Center.
"Things are moving along nicely," committee member Lou Vickery said. "Every family of the seven inductees has been contacted and we are excited about the ceremony."
Vickery brought the idea of an Atmore Hall of Fame in early January to a select group of Atmore citizens. The vision was for a place to honor the achievements of former Atmore residents who have led successful lives outside of the town limits.
That select group became the Hall of Fame committee and they selected seven inductees for the first ever class of the Atmore Area Hall of Fame. A framed picture of each of the inductees will be on display along a wall in the Atmore Public Library after they are inducted Nov. 11.
Those seven inductees include, John M. Jones, Robert Edward Hodnette, William Carl Madison, William Calvin Maxwell, Woodrow McCorvey Sr., Chief Calvin W. McGhee and Arthur "Tarzan" White.
The festivities begin at 6 p.m. and the Creek Family Restaurant will cater the event. The dinner menu offered will include, grilled chicken, roast beef with Au Jus, potatoes au gratin, Italian green beans with a mixed salad and banana pudding for dessert.
Many other businesses have contributed to the cause in various ways. Those businesses include, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians Tribal Council, United Bank, First National Bank &Trust, Masland Carpet and Diamond Oil.
Tickets are going fast and can be purchased for $15 at The Atmore Advance, Atmore News, First National Bank &Trust or United Bank.
