Desmond Moore and Diamond McCullam were the highlights for Escambia County High School at the track meet hosted by T.R. Miller Tuesday in Brewton.

Moore and McCullam were the only athletes to place in the meet for ECHS. Moore finished second in the 200-meter dash, while coming in fourth place in the 100-meter dash. McCullam placed in one event taking home second place in the girls 200-meter dash.

With Moore continuing to pace the team, the Blue Devils are looking to him for leadership, interim head coach Karl Smith said.

“Desmond is our leader,” he said. “He is just an eighth grader, but he is vocal and is a leader for our team. He pushes himself, while pushing others around him.”

As a team, the Blue Devils finished the meet in fifth place out of five teams only scoring nine points in the meet.

On the female side of the meet, the Lady Blue Devils came in fourth place out of five teams scoring 18 points in the meet.

For the girls track team, McCullam has found the most success, but Smith said working to help her improve is still key.

“We are still pushing Diamond,” he said. “She has so much potential, but we are just continuing to work with her, and hopefully, she will come around.”

The winning teams in both the boys and girls were T.R. Miller.

The Lady Tigers took first with 206 points and Hillcrest took second with 54. Florala placed third with 12 points followed by Opp with nine and Atmore with eight.

In the boys meet, T.R. Miller won with 199 points followed by Hillcrest with 96, Opp with 21, Florala with 17 and Atmore with nine.

With a few weeks to to work until the teams next meet, the ECHS track teams will be working to improve endurance, Smith said.

“We have to build on our endurance,” he said. “I think that’s our biggest setback right now because if we have kids running multiple events, they are slowing down towards the their final events. That will be important to improve on before our next meet.”

The Blue Devils next track meet will be at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 12 at T.R. Miller High School in Brewton.
