Stripping tower delivering late
According to Bill Bridges with the Escambia County Engineering Department, the Alabama Transportation Department recently issued a permit for a hauling company to transport a stripping tower used in fertilizer making through downtown Atmore. It will roll through town between midnight and 4 a.m. because of its mammoth size – 13 1/2-feet wide; 80-feet long and 16-feet, 10-inches tall.
Bridges said the State Trooper escorted caravan will travel Hwy. 21 North, but will take a detour on Co. Rd. 1 to Co. Rd. 30 to avoid the underpass at Interstate 65. The delivery will make its way to Mississippi.

Chuck Stevens awarded city bid
The City of Atmore added a new truck to its fleet of vehicles during Monday's city council meeting.
Chuck Stevens Chevrolet was the low bidder on a 2007 Avalanche with a bid of $28,746 beating out Grady Automotive, which bid $31,962.76.
The council also approved the payment of $126,147.11 in bill on behalf of the Atmore Utilities Board for a grant it initiated for the board.

Butt Burners cooking for the Super Bowl
The Butt Burners Relay for Life Team is cooking for the Super Bowl.

Historical Society plans trip to Mobile
The Atmore Historical Society is actively soliciting names for a waiting list for their upcoming trip to the "A Day in Pompeii Exhibit" in Mobile at the Gulf Coast Exploreum and Science Center.
The date and price of the trip will soon be announced. AHS members have priority for seating. Remaining seats on the to-be-decided means of transportation will be assigned only from the waiting list.
Interested parties should call 368-3760 as soon as possible to insure their names are placed on the waiting list.

First Baptist hosting Valentine Banquet
The First Baptist of Atmore will hold a Valentine Banquet Feb. 9, 2007 at 6p.m. in the fellowship hall. The price of admission will be $5 per person. Youth are hosting and will use funds raised to help defray the cost of youth camp.
Faith Bible classes begin at FBC Atmore
The First Baptist Church of Atmore will begin a new semester of Faith Bible Institute Monday night, Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
Atmore VFW to host 50s Soc Hop Dance
The Atmore VFW will host a 50s Soc Hop dance Feb. 2 at 7p.m. Musical entertainment will be Exit 54.
Hunter's Ed classes Feb. 17-18 at JDCC
Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries will sponsor a hunter education class Feb. 17 and 18, 2007 at Jefferson Davis Community College, Neal Colonial Center, Alco Dr. in Brewton. Times for the classes are: Feb. 17- 8 a.m. until noon and 1 p.m. until 5p.m., and 1p.m. to 5p.m. on Feb. 18.
Students must be at least 10 years of age to receive credit. Anyone born on or after August 1, 1977 must pass a certified hunter education course before they can purchase a hunting license in Alabama.
This course is nationally accredited and free to the public. No pre-registration is required. Students will need their social security number and everything else will be provided.

Escambia County BOE meeting Jan. 25
The Escambia County Board of Education will hold a regular meeting on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007 at 4:30p.m. at Turtle Point Environmental Science Center in Flomaton.
Nursing scholarships from the Civic League
The Civic League is accepting applications for nursing scholarships until March 10, 2007.
The scholarships are awarded to outstanding and deserving students who wish to continue their higher education and become a registered nurse.
Applications may be obtained at Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton. Applicants must be a resident of Escambia County Alabama and accepted into a nursing school.
