The Minority Culture Club at Northview High School celebrated Black History Month this past Friday with a program that both entertained and educated.
The theme for the club's 12th annual Black History Month program was "Together We Stand, Divided We Struggle." The theme places emphasis on unity and equality in America.
According to the Minority Club's sponsor, Annie Gilmore, the program is put on to "educate and inform students on the contributions of African-Americans."
The club also strides to promote self-esteem in minority students, to motivate them and to let them know that it is their "time to shine."
Some of the highlights of the program were readings, songs, a slide-show presentation, a tribute to the late James Brown and a human video. The program's success was attributed to hard work and dedication of the students.
The guest speakers for both programs were the Rev. Leon Leath and the Rev. Wayne Marshall, Sr. Leath was a Chief Petty Officer with the U.S. Navy and a military policeman from Milton, Fla. Marshall is a psychotherapist with Child Overlay Services at Lakeview Center and is from Walnut Hill, Fla.
