The Atmore City Council took care of business quickly during Monday afternoon's meeting with the absence of mayor Howard Shell, who is out of town on business.
The highlight of the eight-minute meeting was the tabling of a retail liquor license request from Atmore's newest Mexican restaurant, Monterrey's Mexican Grill.
"The only obstacle I see, I don't know if the gentleman has made an application, but we do have a church at the back door," public safety director Glenn Carlee said. "I don't know if it's within the footage or not, but the ABC Board may need to do a survey with that church right behind the Day's Inn. That's the only obstacle that I'm aware of."
According to city ordinance 485-A, which was passed in 1988, a business cannot sale or serve alcohol within 300 feet of the front door of a church, school, school grounds, park or park grounds. Carlee suggested to the council that they table the issue until a recommendation is received from the ABC Board, which could then come out and conduct a field survey.
"I don't oppose the license as long as it meets the requirements of that survey," Carlee said.
The council unanimously agreed to table the request and have Monterrey's owner Angel Zavala Borja contact the ABC Board to complete his application with the state.
