Escambia County senior first baseman Corey Flowers served up a grand slam home run in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie in the Blue Devils' game against W.S. Neal March 13 in East Brewton.
ECHS head coach Keith Nall said the home run was the deciding point in the game. The Devils (2-9) led 7-3 after the sixth and were able to escape a three-run seventh inning by the Blue Eagles, and emerged with a 7-6 victory.
Kevin Green toed the rubber for ECHS and threw a complete game, allowing six runs, three earned, on five hits and striking out eight batters.
Neal opened the scoring in the first inning with two runs and added one in the fourth inning before the Blue Devils got on the board in the fifth inning with two runs. ECHS scored one run in the sixth before Flowers powered the ball over the fence with the bases loaded.
W.S. Neal made an attempt to steal the game from the Blue Devils in the seventh inning with a three-run inning, but ECHS held on for the victory.
Flowers led the way, going 1-for-3 at the plate with the grand slam, four RBIs and two runs scored. Justin Boykin was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, Anthony Matthews was 1-for-3 with one run scored and Michael Thomas was 1-for-5 with one run scored.
