Veterans from the 34th district gathered last Saturday at the Atmore American Legion Post 90 for their quarterly meeting.
Post 90 Legion Commander Aubrey Stanley said the meeting was to discuss decisions that were made on a national level, along with what the Legion has planned for the upcoming year.
"The national Legion sends information down to the state and the state sends it down to us," Stanley said. "We discussed what we plan on doing throughout the year. We discussed changes and what is helping other Legions build membership."
James L. Miller, 2006 Veteran of the Year at both post level and at department (state) level, attended the meeting and gave a speech about what he has done for the American Legion and what the Legion means to him.
Miller has been a veteran for more than two decades and has played many roles for the Legion.
"I have been a veteran and a member of the American Legion for 24 years," Miller said. "I have been the junior vice president for the past three years, in charge of the Honor Guard for the last four years and the county commander this June will be four years."
As the 2006 Veteran of the Year , Miller was pleased to come to the 34th district meeting as he praised the Legion's Auxiliary for their cooking and other preparations for the meeting.
"It's an honor for me to come down here as the Veteran of the Year," he said. "I am proud to be here. The Ladies Auxiliary do a lot of work."
Stanley said Legion members from several areas of the state were present at the meeting.
"They came from as far as Decatur," Stanley said. "We had people from Brewton, Opp and Evergreen. There were members from all over the 34th district. I don't know how far north the district goes."
There were approximately 50 people at the meeting, according to Stanley.
"Both sides of the room were filled up," he said.
Another Legion 34th district meeting will be held in three months at a different Legion post.
