Spring is a time for many students to prepare for prom, graduation and whatever the future holds, but for the 53 football players at Escambia County High School it is a time to hone their skills for next season.
The ECHS Blue Devils hit the practice field April 23 for their first day of spring practice and the spring fun will end May 11 with a spring scrimmage game against Robertsdale High School.
"I have been talking with their coach about the game and it should be a good tune-up for us," ECHS head coach Kyle Davis said. "They are going to run a 4-3 defense and a Cover 2 set at us, so we have been practicing what to run against that all spring."
Davis said the game should be an interesting gauge of how far the Blue Devils have progressed this spring. He was also pleased with the number of athletes who showed up to practice.
"Any time you win you have people who want to be a part of it," Davis said. "And we plan on winning more games next year than we did last year. We look forward to a successful season."
The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in Herbert Barnes Stadium.
The Blue Devils have been working hard the past two weeks, according to Davis. And he said they have improved from the first day of practice.
"The spring has been going good," he said. "I mean you have your ups and your downs, your good and your bad, but for the most part we have gotten better day by day. And we are getting to the point of polishing it up and getting things in order."
For anyone wanting to get a glimpse of the 2007 ECHS football team, drop by Herbert Barnes Stadium Friday night when the Blue Devils host Robertsdale.
