Burn ban lifted by Atmore Fire &Rescue
According to Atmore Fire &Rescue chief Gerry McGhee, the recent burn ban has been lifted until further notice.
"Unless it starts getting dry again the burn ban will be lifted," McGhee said.

NHS cheerleaders to hold camp July 21
Northview High School varsity cheerleaders are sponsoring an event for individuals aspiring to become a cheerleader in future years.
The event on July 21 from 9 a.m. until noon will be for ages 5-14 and the cost is $15 per person. The group will meet in the NHS gym.
Those in attendance will learn different stunts, proper techniques and ways to keep them safe but also will "WOW" the crowd.
A goodie bag will be offered and snacks will be provided.

There will be a meeting held July 13 at 6 p.m. for those seriously interested in the arts. This meeting will be held at Vikki Day's Art Gallery/ Studio at 106 Ridgeley Street. Fiddlers Convention slated for July 21
Plans for the 28th annual Atmore Rotary Club Fiddlers Convention are under way.
The event will be held at 2 p.m. on July 21 in the Escambia County High School auditorium. The house band will be "Down Home."
The categories of competition are as follows: vocal groups (acappela is acceptable), bands, dobro, banjo, guitar, mandolin and fiddlers. There is no registration fee. Awards are first place $100, second $75 and third $50 except for fiddlers, which is first $1,000, second $200 and third $100.

Antioch Baptist food service ends Aug. 3
Antioch Baptist Church in Freemanville will be holding a summer food service program from June 6 through Aug. 3.

Covenant Hospice seeking volunteers
Covenant Hospice is seeking compassionate volunteers who are interested in making a difference in the lives of patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses. A volunteer training workshop will be held from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on July 9 at the Covenant Hospice office in Brewton, located at 1023 Douglas Ave., Suite 204.
Even if you only have a little time to give, you can make a difference. The workshop will discuss the many ways in which volunteers can choose to get involved, including providing patient/family support, visiting nursing homes, being ambassadors and assisting with fundraising activities and office tasks.

Reid State Nursing applications due July 23
Fall Semester application deadline for Practical Nursing at Reid State Technical College is July 23. Fall semester applicants for the Practical Nursing program are required to have application packets complete and in student services by July 23. VFW hosts Friday night dances
Friday Night Dances at the VFW are open to the general public for a donation of $5 per participant. Country and soft rock music for dancing is provided by the VFW's FREEDOM BAND. If you like good, clean and safe fun, the VFW Post located at 206 West Ashley Street is the place to be on Friday nights from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. "Pot luck" finger food and suppers are scheduled occasionally in conjunction with the dances to add to the merriment.
Remember the VFW Post in Atmore is the place to be on Friday nights.
Swimming, tennis lessons offered
The pool at Tom Byrne Park is officially open for the summer.
Public swimming is on Sunday through Saturday from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Admission for public swimming is $1 for anyone 17 years old and younger and $1.50 for those 18 and older.
The pool is also available for rent for private parties on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Cost for pool rental is $35 per hour and that covers lifeguards and pool usage.
Day and night swimming lessons and tennis lessons are also available. Day swimming and tennis lessons are available in two-week sessions and there are three time slots for the lessons.
Times available are 9 a.m. until 10 a.m., 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. until noon. The cost is $20 per session.
Night swimming lesson sessions will last three weeks and take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights at one of three times, 5:30 p.m. until 6 p.m., 6 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. The cost is $30 per session.

Registration for the 2007-2008 school year at Escambia Academy for grades K-4 will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday each week from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. until all classes are full. In order to register, one must bring an original birth certificate, Alabama immunization form and social security card. There has been no increase in tuition. Atmore residents: Clean up after pets
Atmore City Hall has been flooded with calls of a dirty nature.
According to employees, complaints have been filed from homeowners regarding residents walking their dogs on leashes and not cleaning up after them.

Gov. Riley offers energy assistance
Persons with disabilities, the elderly and low-income residents experiencing difficulty paying high utility bills may be eligible to receive assistance thanks to a grant announced by Gov. Bob Riley.
Riley awarded $99,271 for home weatherization to the Community Action Agency of Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Monroe and Conecuh counties. The organization will use the funds to make home energy efficiency improvements on 28 homes in the five-county area. On average, weatherization can reduce a home's energy costs by $358 a year.
