(This week The Atmore Advance spotlights 99-year-old Annie Jaye. Jaye used to enjoy quilting and she made her last quilt in 2000. She attends Mineola Baptist Church whenever she is able and said she still trusts in the Lord in everything she does.)
Q: When and where were you born?
A: I was born Aug. 4, 1907 in Mineola in Monroe County.
Q: Who were your parents?
A: Richard and Minnie Morris. They came from Wainwright, north of where we're living now.
Q: Do you have any brothers or sisters?
A: I have one living brother. My brothers and sisters were William, Leslie, Edward, Kitty Davis and Floyd Morris. Floyd is the one that is still living. He turned 93 July 16.
Q: Where did you attend high school and college?
A: I went to Mineola Community school. I had no college.
Q: Do you do a lot of traveling?
A: Yes, I've been to Louisiana, Florida, Rhode Island, Chicago and North Carolina. I would say I like living in Alabama best.
Q: What jobs have you held?
A: I was a housewife and I did field work. We lived in Baldwin County for the first part of our marriage then we came back to Monroe County. We had a farm in Monroe County.
I also helped my husband make syrup. We had our own syrup mill in Mineola.
Q: Did you ever marry?
A: I married Amos Travis Jaye.
Q: Do you have any children or grandchildren?
A: I have six children but I lost one in 2001. We had four boys and two girls, Alberta Henderson is in Ocala, Fla., Travis is in Providence, R.I., Kenneth is in Mineola, Myra Saucer is at Goodway Junction and James Edward is in Vinton, La.
I have 24 grandchildren, 52 great grandchildren and 32 great great grandchildren.
Q: Where do you attend church?
A: I go to Mineola Baptist when I'm able to get there.
Q: What keeps you busy these days?
A: I don't do anything but sit around. People come by and visit me and ride me around. My hobbies used to be quilting and hand-work. My last quilt was made in 2000.
I read my Bible and work puzzles that my daughter fixes for me to work on. They enlarge my Sunday School lesson every week so I can see it.
Q: What's the most fun and interesting thing you've ever done?
A: Fishing, I'd go fishing anywhere I could go. My son lives right by me and they have a pond and they take me out sometimes.
Q: What advice would you like to give people on staying healthy?
A: Don't do drugs, that is the best thing to stay off of. To trust in the Lord and do the best you can for Him. I'm still trying to live for the Lord the best I can, He's the one that's keeping me here.
