The Escambia County High School football team grabbed five wins in Prattville during a 7-on-7 camp.
The Blue Devils defeated Demopolis, Spanish Fort and the Prattville C team on the opening day of the camp, July 18. They also lost to Smiths Station, Enterprise and the Prattville A and B squads.
"We should have been 4-3, maybe 5-2 on that first day," ECHS head coach Kyle Davis said. "All 7-on-7s are all passing and we were able to find a good cover scheme and find success. We had a lot of success on offense as well."
The Blue Devils were seeded fifth out of 12 teams on the second day of the camp. All the teams involved, with the exception of one, were AHSAA Class 5A or 6A.
ECHS lost big to Smiths Station 41-16 in the first game of the tournament, but bounced back with two wins over Prattville. The two wins put ECHS one game away from getting back into the winner's bracket, but they lost a heartbreaker to Spanish Fort, 27-26.
"I had a talk with the team after the Smiths Station game and we came out and battled against Prattville," Davis said. "And the Prattville B team was probably the second most talented team out there."
Davis said the 7-on-7 camps are not as much about winning, as they are about gaining confidence.
"Overall we gained a lot of confidence because we saw we could beat the teams that were bigger than us," Davis said. "And we competed the second day and came away with some good wins."
