Williams facing execution Aug. 23
Luther Jerome Williams has been on Alabama's death row for more than 17 years. In November 1989, Williams was convicted of the "execution style" murder of John Robert Kirk.
On Jan 22, 1988, Williams stole an automobile from a parking lot, finding a .22 caliber pistol in the trunk. The next morning Williams and two other men saw Kirk parked on the side of the Interstate where they stopped to rob him. Williams led Kirk into a nearby wooded area, where he shot the victim in the head with the .22 caliber pistol stolen the night before. The trio then stole Kirk's money and his truck, leaving his body in the woods.
After finding him guilty of the capital offense of murder during the course of a robbery, Williams' jury recommended a sentence by a 10-2 vote. At sentencing, the trial court found two aggravating circumstances, Williams committed the murder while under a sentence of imprisonment and Williams murdered Kirk during the commission of a robbery.
Williams is scheduled to die by lethal injection on Aug 23, 2007, at Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore.

ACH presents seminar Aug. 22
Atmore Community Hospital GoldenCare will present a seminar on the risks of stroke Aug. 22, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Mayson Auditorium.
Registered Nurse and Stroke Coordinator Tammie Stefanko will provide education on stroke risk factors, signs and symptoms and prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Controlling and preventing high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol as well as not smoking and maintaining a healthy weight are all active, preventive measures that men and women can take in reducing the risk of stroke.

American Legion selling Boston butts
The American Legion will be selling a variety of items for Labor Day on Aug. 31 beginning at 10 a.m.
Whole Boston butts will be sold for $25, barbeque plates will be sold for $6 and barbeque pork sandwiches and chips will be sold for $3. Those with tickets can come to the event from 10 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. and walk-ins are welcome after 11:45 a.m. as supplies last.

First Assembly hosts health classes
The Atmore First Assembly of God Congregational Health Ministry announces the following classes for this quarter:
Senior Adult Exercise Class
The Atmore First Assembly Senior Adults Celebration Group is offering a low impact exercise class each Friday morning at 10 a.m. The class works on balance, flexibility and stretching. Two-pound weights needed, but are not required. They are just suggested for additional strength building.

"Connections" slated Aug. 23
A meeting of "Connections," a new family prison ministry, will be held at 3 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Hospitality House.

Cooper, Bryan benefit Aug. 24
There will be a medical benefit fish fry for Marion Cooper and Ronald Bryan sponsored by the Walnut Hill Ruritan at the Walnut Hill Community Club on Hwy. 97 just west of Ernest Ward Middle School Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Donations will be $6 per plate. Will deliver orders of 10 or more.
First Assembly CPR classes Aug. 24
The CPR classes at Atmore First Assembly have been rescheduled to Aug. 24 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. and Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. until 1. p.m.
The following information is the same:
Each class is a stand alone session and only one session is required. The class is ideal for mothers of young children, family members caring for chronically ill people in the home and others who might need to update their certification. VFW hosts Friday night dances
Friday Night Dances at the VFW are open to the general public for a donation of $5 per participant. Country and soft rock music for dancing is provided by the VFW's FREEDOM BAND. If you like good, clean and safe fun, the VFW Post located at 206 West Ashley Street is the place to be on Friday nights from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. "Pot luck" finger food and suppers are scheduled occasionally in conjunction with the dances to add to the merriment.
Remember the VFW Post in Atmore is the place to be on Friday nights.
2nd Mt. Triumph hosts homecoming
The 2nd Mt. Triumph Baptist Church will host a homecoming and revival beginning Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Freddy Banks.
The evangelist for the week of Aug. 27-31 is the Rev. Nathaniel Dortch of St. James Baptist Church in Mobile. The night services begin at 7:30.
Legion hosts line dancing classes
Beginner country line dance classes start Sept. 6 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall at the intersection of Main and Church streets. The advance class is from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. For more information, call 368-8843 or 368-5769.
Bratt Assembly hosts revival Sept. 16-23
Bratt Assembly of God Church will have Revival September 16-23. It will start at 7 p.m. on the weekdays and at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Evangelist Lowell Haynes will be the guest speaker.
Fire Dept. hosting fun day Sept. 8
Friendship Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting its annual fun day on Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be a smoke Boston butt sale, live entertainment, arts and crafts, a classic car show, door prizes, bake sale and raffle prizes. We will have lots of activities for the kids along with plenty of good food including BBQ sandwiches, chicken plates, hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, sausage dogs and funnel cakes. This will be a great day of fun for the entire family.
All proceeds benefit the Friendship Volunteer Fire Department. Trinity Church hosts speaker Sept. 20
Dr. Ted Masburn, professor of philosophy, chair of the department of humanities at the University of Mobile, will be the guest lecturer at Trinity Church Sept. 20.
Dr. Masburn is a widely recognized lecturer and will speak on "The History of Christianity."

The Leadership Atmore Steering Committee is asking all Leadership Atmore Alumni for their help in recruiting class members for 2007-2008. Please submit names to the chamber office as soon as possible.
Children needed for NWE football
Children ages 11-12 are needed for the NWE football league. If the league does not fill then none of the age groups will be allowed to compete in the Gulf Coast Youth Association this year.
Concerned Citizens need uniforms
The Concerned Citizens of Atmore are asking all Atmore residents with old school uniforms to donate them to the group. The Annual School Uniform Recycle is taking place now.
All uniforms are laundered and given back to the community. For more information call Sandra Gray at 368-6023.
